The project

Hydromine proposes an innovative approach to hydrogen production from a high-energy fraction of the municipal solid waste (Refuse Derived Fuel – RDF).

A novel batch-mode and hydrogen-oriented RDF gasification technology will be developed building on earlier experiences in in-situ coal gasification technology via repurposing of knowledge and existing coal infrastructure. The RDF feedstock upgrading, to be fully integrated with the HydroMine process, will build on the currently used wet coal processing techniques. A CCU/CCS ready stream of carbon dioxide will be produced in the process chain through the application of downstream hybrid membrane-based and adsorption hydrogen separation.

Impacts

Significant breakthroughs in the municipal solid waste gasification and in the separation of complex gas mixtures, for hydrogen and carbon dioxide recovery.

Increase in availability of cheaper hydrogen, second life of the mechanical coal processing plants.

Reduction of greenhouse gases emission from the landfills - methane, minimization of the odour nuisance of the municipal waste landfills, employment at the coal processing plants remained.
